The City of Ottumwa is located approximately 64 miles southeast of Des Moines in Wapello County. The city is divided into two sections, North and South Ottumwa, by the Des Moines River, and spreads over bottomlands and rises on a series of terraces northward to the city limits.   Organized in 1843, the City of Ottumwa is credited with the construction of one of the first bridges to span the Des Moines River. This bridge. located on Green Street, was constructed during the Lincoln-Douglas campaign to accommodate a mass meeting held in the City of Ottumwa.
