Flood Plain Ordinance

Floodplain ordinances control development in identified flood hazard areas.  These ordinances are adopted by cities and counties under chapters 331, 335, 364, and 414 of the Code of Iowa.  Floodplain ordinances are designed to meet the minimum requirements for acceptance in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). Residents living in cities and counties that participate in the NFIP are eligible to purchase flood insurance.  Once adopted the ordinance must be enforced and update ro ensure continued eligibility under the NFIP.

Does your city or county participate in the NFIP?  See NFIP Community Status Book - view the current list of cities and counties with identified flood hazard areas, the date of mapping, and NFIP status from FEMA.
