The Area 15 Regional Planning Commission, located in Ottumwa Iowa, is seeking a qualified individual for the entry level position of Assistant Planner.  The successful candidate will assist staff in providing technical assistance to cities and counties in a six county region of southeast Iowa in the following areas: grant writing, comprehensive planning, transportation planning, economic development strategies, data gathering, mapping, city codification and plan preparation.

 

The ideal candidate for this position will possess strong written, verbal, and interpersonal skills, be self-motivated and able to work independently, able to communicate with public officials and exchange information, proficiency with computers and computer programs (particularly Microsoft Office and ArcGIS), able to understand state and federal assistance programs, and able to write reports and applications for funding assistance.

 

A bachelor’s degree in a field related to city/regional planning, landscape architecture, public administration, geography, political science, or business is preferred.  A valid driver’s license is required.  Annual starting salary range of $34,000-$35,000 plus benefit package including employer contribution to IPERS state retirement program, 100% employer-paid medical and accidental insurance, and holiday/vacation pay (benefit package value $8,000+).
